Academy of Ancient Music
Christian Curnyn harpsichord/director
Keri Fuge soprano
Tim Mead counter-tenor
The Academy of Ancient Music, famous for its recordings and performances, is joined for this Italian programme by a guest director who’s established an impressive reputation in the world’s opera houses, and two shining stars in the current generation of Baroque singers. The first of Corelli’s celebrated string concertos precedes two works from Handel’s years in Rome, a devotional aria and a dramatic cantata portraying a lovers’ quarrel between a shepherd and a shepherdess. The concert ends with Pergolesi’s moving Stabat Mater for two solo voices, the most frequently reprinted work in the 18th century and one that’s still as popular today.
